The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is the Government of India's flagship rooftop-solar scheme, launched in February 2024. It pays a central subsidy directly into your bank account for installing a grid-connected rooftop solar system, and aims to give participating households up to 300 units of free electricity per month. Applications run through the National Portal (pmsuryaghar.gov.in) and your local DISCOM.

Subsidy amounts

System sizeCentral subsidy
1 kW₹30,000
2 kW₹60,000
3 kW or larger₹78,000 (maximum)
Housing societies / RWAs (common facilities)₹18,000 per kW, up to 500 kW

How to apply — step by step

  1. Register on the National Portal. Create your account on pmsuryaghar.gov.in with your state, electricity distribution company (DISCOM) and consumer number from your electricity bill.
  2. Apply for rooftop solar. Submit the online application for your chosen system size. Your DISCOM reviews it and issues feasibility approval.
  3. Install through a registered vendor. Get the plant installed by a DISCOM-registered vendor (like Symbroj Solar) using approved components as per MNRE norms.
  4. Net metering & inspection. After installation, apply for net metering. The DISCOM inspects the plant and installs the net meter, and a commissioning certificate is generated on the portal.
  5. Subsidy credited to your bank account. Submit your bank details and a cancelled cheque on the portal. The central subsidy is credited directly to your account, typically within about 30 days of commissioning.

Documents you need

  • Recent electricity bill (with consumer number)
  • Proof of identity (Aadhaar) and address
  • Proof of roof ownership
  • Bank account details + cancelled cheque (for the subsidy transfer)

Frequently asked questions

How much subsidy do I get under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?

The central subsidy is ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third kW — a maximum of ₹78,000 for a 3 kW or larger residential system. Housing societies and RWAs get ₹18,000 per kW for common-facility plants up to 500 kW.

Who is eligible for the PM Surya Ghar subsidy?

Indian households that own a house with a roof suitable for solar, have a valid electricity connection, and have not already availed another rooftop-solar subsidy. The plant must be grid-connected and installed through a DISCOM-registered vendor.

How do I apply for the PM Surya Ghar scheme?

Apply online at pmsuryaghar.gov.in: register with your DISCOM and consumer number, submit the application, wait for feasibility approval, install through a registered vendor, complete net metering and inspection, then submit bank details — the subsidy is paid directly into your account. Symbroj Solar handles this entire process for its customers.

How long does it take to receive the subsidy?

After the plant is commissioned and the net meter is installed, the subsidy is typically credited to your bank account within about 30 days of submitting bank details on the National Portal.

Does the subsidy apply to commercial or industrial systems?

No. The PM Surya Ghar central financial assistance is for residential rooftop systems (and housing-society common facilities). Commercial and industrial systems instead benefit from accelerated depreciation and lower per-kW pricing at scale.
