PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana gives homeowners a central subsidy of up to Rs 78,000 on a rooftop solar system: Rs 30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and Rs 18,000 for the third kW. The scheme is simple, but applications still get stuck on missing documents. Here is the complete checklist.

Documents you need

  • Recent electricity bill showing your consumer number and sanctioned load. The name on the bill should match the applicant.
  • Aadhaar card of the applicant.
  • Bank account details: a cancelled cheque or passbook copy for the account where the subsidy will be credited. The account should be in the applicant's name.
  • Proof of roof ownership: usually the property document or house tax receipt. Tenants cannot claim the subsidy.
  • A passport-size photograph and a working mobile number linked to Aadhaar for OTP verification.

How the application works

  • 1. Register on the PM Surya Ghar National Portal with your state, DISCOM, consumer number and mobile number.
  • 2. Apply for rooftop solar and wait for feasibility approval from your DISCOM.
  • 3. Install through a registered vendor. Only installations by portal-registered vendors qualify for the subsidy. Symbroj Solar is a registered vendor and files this paperwork for you.
  • 4. Net meter installation and inspection by your DISCOM after installation.
  • 5. Commissioning certificate and subsidy. Once the commissioning report is generated and your bank details are verified, the subsidy is credited directly to your account.

Common reasons applications get delayed

  • The electricity bill is in a parent's or previous owner's name
  • Bank account details do not match the applicant
  • The chosen system size exceeds the sanctioned load, triggering a load-enhancement step first
  • The vendor is not registered on the portal, which makes the installation ineligible
